The University of Turku was founded in 1920 as the first entirely Finnish-speaking
university in the country. Today, the university is an international university
with a reputation for high quality research, teaching and services.The
university has six faculties: Education, Humanities, Law, Mathematics
and Natural Sciences, Medicine and Social Sciences. Each faculty offers
opportunities for studying in English. The university is especially known
for its education and research in Biosciences, Mathematics and Mathematical
Research, Astronomy and Space Research, Learning and Teaching, and in
Cultural Interaction and Integration.
The Abo/Turku Consortium
The University of Turku is a member of the Abo/Turku
Consortium.
Students enrolled at the University of Turku may also take courses at
the two other member universities of the Consortium, i.e. Åbo Akademi

Courses are also taught in English in the fields of Mathematics and Natural
Sciences, e.g. in Biochemistry and Food Chemistry, Earth Sciences, as
well as in Biotechnology. ISEP students may also select courses offered
by Master’s degree programs taught in English depending on their
educational background. The university’s special research units
include the Archipelago Research Institute and the Subarctic Research
Institute, both situated at appropriate, scenic locations.
The Finnish Language and Culture program has been developed for international
students who wish to deepen their previous knowledge of Finnish. In addition
to language studies, courses are also offered on Finnish Literature, History,
Culture, and Life in the Finnish Society. The language of instruction
is Finnish.
