The University of Oulu is a multidisciplinary research university, the second largest in Finland. At its foundation in 1958, the university was the northernmost university in the world. The focus areas of the university are Information Technology, Biosciences and Health, Cultural Identity and Interaction as well as Environment, Natural Resources and Materials. They are directly linked to the location and to the region around the university. 17,000 students and 3,000 staff members study and work at the six faculties (Education, Humanities, Technology, Science, Medicine, and Economics and Business Administration), which form a vibrant academic community.
In Oulu, a 60-minute flight from Helsinki, the Finnish capital, we are up North, but thanks to the North Atlantic Drift, the conditions here are not as harsh as the latitudes would suggest. A youthful student city of 130,000 inhabitants, Oulu has a comfortable size, tranquil surroundings and a Scandinavian ambience.
